Promoting Dignity to drought affected women and girls through GBV Risk Mitigation and Provision of GBV Services in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor of lower Shabelle regions (15/09/2017 – 15/05/2018) SHF

Sexual violence has been adapted, register rape cases, protect sexual abuse and harassment, prevent exploitation, and forced marriage and FGMC etc.

Deliverables
SCC and SSWC/UNFPA signed MOU which aimed o operationalization of safe home for GBV survivors. The center is aimed to provide post rape treatment, psychosocial support, referral cases, counseling and medical services to GBV survivors. The MOU expired 31 December 2017. However, the operationalization was renewed and extended up to February 2017.

The significant events in January and February were that the Safe home center received 5 rape survivors, 4 physical assaults of rape attempts and 4 domestic violence against women; These survivors were saved from unwanted pregnancy, trauma and caught into contagious diseases or commit a suicide or became disadvantageous cell of a community members. All the 9 survivors were women of child bearing age between. The survivors were given, treatment, post rape treatment, psychosocial counseling, dignity kits and accommodation.

Domestic violence of physical assault in these two months were 4 cases that have reported to the center, SCC has done awareness about the domestic violence inside the IDPs, Kulmis camp and Afgoye villages. We have also done awareness about FGM for TBA Mothers also house to house visit in the inside the IDPs.

Main activities undertaken were included assisting, treating rape survivors, psychosocial consoling, accommodating and referral for the rape survivors. All activities were in line with the plans set forth to achieve targets.

In the IDP camps and villages, awareness-raising on GBV were given communities as well as survivors. There were outreach campaigns followed conducted by the staff at the center and religious leaders to stop domestic violence and GBV.

in the reporting period SCC distributed material support of 500 solar lamps to 500 drought affected families in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor. this improved the risk of night assault and GBV incidents in the vulnerable IDPs in the small make shit bulls. to improve the situation of the drought affected female women and adolescent girls SCC distributed 235 dignity kits to 235 drought affected female beneficiaries in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor.


180 community members have been trained and engaged in prevention and response of GBV in their respective areas.

The aim was to enlighten the knowledge and understanding of the participants to identify the type of GBV, participate in the referral network in their respective locations, and provide preventive and responsive services to women and girls subjected to violence.

Rape incidents are still occurring and may occur but its consequence and affects to the survivors have been partially minimized.

Trained community members on GBV in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor led to better coordination with service providers and survivors to get timely treatment.

Consequences on GBV incidents have come to reality in the minds of religious leaders, chiefs, women and youths in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor through training workshops and establishment of local GBV committees.

So far In Safe home Centers in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor, 57 GBV cases that 27 of them were rape survivors while the rest were physical assault and rape attempt.

7 of the rape survivors were children between 10 – 16 years old. SCC provided timely and appropriate treatment, psycho social counseling and care, dignity kits and accommodation to the rape survivor upon their consent. these GBV survivors have been protected from effects of HIV, STIs trauma, physical and psychological effects of chronic pain and unwanted pregnancy that could have changed the lives of the survivors if not treated.
