Activities
To Increase the access to WASH services for new arrival drought affected people and IDPs was to reduce AWD/cholera diseases which influenced amongst the drought affected populations in the Afgoye corridor of Banadir and Afgoye villages of Lower Shabelle regions.
Deliverables
SCC sourced out and contracted with five water vendors/commercial water source companies who had presence and supply of water in the target IDPs.
The contracted water source companies provided water voucher to 4500 households of two 20 Jerry cans per house hold per day.
The water sources constructed 14 water points with sock pits and drainage systems inside the IDPs camps so that the water usage does not contaminate the settlements to provide safe and clean water to 4500 families already registered.
SCC hygiene promotion staff of 20 chlorinators continued to chlorinate 60 water sources in Afgoye and Afgoye corridor including Dayniile district and Wadajir districts. 40 water sources in Afgoye while 10 in Afgoye corridor and 10 in Wadajir district. Water source chlorination will enable 30000 people access clean and safe water.
SCC conducted distribution 20-liter Jerry cans and Aqua tabs to 4500 (27,000) persons in the IDPs in Afgoye corridor on 3rd July 2017. The distribution period was six days and distributed 4500 Jerry cans and 240,000 (15 boxes) of aqua tabs for 4500 house hold in which each family received 50 pieces of aqua tabs.
SCC implanted WASH project funded by UNICEF in Jazeera area, It was rehabilitated/upgraded 5 shallow wells were installed with hand pumps in JAZEERA village of Afgoye of Lower Shabelle region. The project enabled an access of clean water to 2000 (334 HHs) people in Jaziira area, and stimulated the moral of the local people who had a problem in access of clean water. The rehabilitation/construction was completed in July 2017.
SCC conducted three days training workshop on 1-3 Aug 2017 for Shallow wells with handpumps operators selected five shallow wells rehabilitated/constructed in JAZEERA village of Lower Shabelle region. A total of 20 operators were selected from five wells that each well selected five operators.
On 10th – 11th June, SCC conducted a workshop on hygiene promotion for 70 hygiene promoters of 15 male and 55 females selected from 11 IDP camps in Mogadishu Afgoye corridor IDP settlements and Afgoye. 35 trainees (24 female and 11 male) were selected from IDP settlements by the camp leaders and 35 trainees (31 female and 4 male) from Afgoye district selected by the DC.
SCC hygiene promoters conducted hygiene promotion activities. They have done home to home visit activities in all areas of the intervention. The hygiene promoters reached 13500 beneficiaries.
A total of 50 people was conducted sanitation training for opinion leaders including community elders and religious leaders of all male selected from 11 IDP camps in Afgoye corridor IDP settlements and Afgoye district. A total of 25 trainees were selected from IDP settlements by the camp leaders and 25 trainees from Afgoye district selected by the Afgoye district and its villages.
SCC has done faecal sludge activity. So far the project activity was completed, a total of 1859 metric cubic of human wastes were desludged from 1115 overflowing latrines in the IDP camp locations between Km8 up t Km13 area.
To increase sanitation access to vulnerable people OTP/TSFP of WFP sites, SCC constructed 12 VIP twin gender sensitive sanitation facilities with hand washing in the newly established OTP/TSFP centers in the IDP camps in Afgoye corridor; 6 in Dayniile district while the 4 in Kahda district and 2 were constructed in Dharkeynley district.
All the VIP toilets were built in TSFP/nutrition centers under WFP and its partners.
This project was intended to provide almost 4500 of people with safe and clean water, and this will finalize constant needs of water that has been in placed in the TSFP/Nutrition feeding centers under WFP and its partners.
SCC constructed 148 emergency IDP latrines in fourteenth locations in km 8 – 13 and Afgoye district. A total of 4440 people were benefitted for these latrines.
