About Us

1.BACKGROUND & INTRODUCTION

For more than 30 years, Somalia has experienced political instability and conflict, resulting in the erosion of social cohesion and the collapse of state and community structures. In addition, land degradation and erratic weather has left the country vulnerable to more frequent and larger magnitude droughts, devastating cyclones and frequent flooding contributing to further loss of livelihoods, extreme poverty, and large-scale population displacement. Even as Somalia is witnessing a rebirth in development, reconstruction and peacebuilding, recurrent climatic shocks (droughts and flooding) and protracted civil war have left the Somali people and society in critical need of assistance at all levels. The need for emergency support and sustainable social and infrastructure development has never been greater and is crucial to ensure the survival of Somalia and prevention of future conflict. It is against this backdrop that Somali Community concern was launched in Somalia.

Somalia Community Concern (SCC) is a national, voluntary, non-governmental, non-political, nonpartisan, and nonprofit making organization that is well established in the field of emergency response and developmental programs. Since 2003, SCC has been at the forefront of emergency response,
establishing operations in difficult to access locations and reach those most in need. We aim to lift poor and marginalized households out of the vicious cycle of dependence by addressing the underlying causes of vulnerability to environmental and socioeconomic shocks. Our programs are focused on serving the most vulnerable and marginalized people in Somalia, namely children, adolescent boys and girls, women, persons with disabilities, people from minority clans and internally displaced persons.

Since inception, SCC has successfully completed over 75 projects that have improved the lives of the underprivileged and vulnerable women, children, and IDPs by providing food assistance, shelter, WASH, Health, protection, education, peace building, and capacity building. We work in partnership with community organizations, leaders, and institutions to ensure our projects are contributing to sustainable development. Our relationship with the beneficiary communities is central to our success. We design and implement projects with (and not just for) the local communities.

SCC teams are devoted to supporting vulnerable communities in Somalia and accompanying them in building a better future by providing a response adapted to specific needs. Our staff provides aid to populations affected by crisis using an approach that is both local and global, multidisciplinary and adapted to each context. By ensuring the link between Emergency, Rehabilitation and Development, SCC teams guarantee that interventions made in a situation of crisis are useful and sustainable, because only long-term support – by remaining in the area post emergency and involving communities – can end the poverty cycle and accompany populations on the road to development.

Our projects are coordinated through a liaison office in Kenya and the main office in Somalia. They are implemented with support from various partners including SFG line ministries, Somali Federal Government member states, UNICEF, UNOCHA/SHF, UN - HABITAT, HRF, IOM, USAID, INTERSOS, NRC and UNFPA Somalia.
